Billy
Graham supports new ‘Passion’ film
The
Rev. Billy Graham has given an enthusiastic thumbs-up to Mel Gibson’s
biblical epic, “The Passion of Christ,” following a private
screening with the movie star, according to the Associated Press.
Graham’s
approval stands in stark contrast to the criticisms some Jewish leaders have
voiced about the movie, which is set to be released Feb. 25. Critics say the
film could spark anti-Jewish prejudice because the portrayal of Jews will
promote the idea that they were collectively responsible for Christ’s
death.
In
a recent news release from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the
85-year-old evangelist from North Carolina disagreed with that notion.
“The
film is faithful to the Bible’s teaching that we are all responsible for
Jesus’ death, because we all have sinned,” Graham said. “It
is our sins that caused His death, not any particular group. No one who views
this film’s compelling imagery will ever be the same.”
Graham
said he “was moved to tears” by the film, which he saw a month ago
at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Gibson also met with
Graham before and after the private screening, which was attended by Jim
Caviezel, the actor who portrays Jesus.
Gibson
spent a reported $30 million to produce the movie, which he has defended as
faithful to the Gospels. The dialogue is in Latin and Aramaic, with English
subtitles.
“I
doubt if there has been a more graphic and moving presentation of Jesus’
death and resurrection, which Christians believe are the most important events
in human history,” Graham said. — E.P. News
