Music Spotlight:
Band's
goal is to lead people to Jesus
³Be still, and
know that He is God,² seems to be the message behind the melody
in the Before I Breathed a Breath EP recently released by Ever Alive,
the worship band of Ignite Church in Escondido.
The bandıs singer, Josh Rosenbohm, said the second track,
³All Is Well,² materialized from Psalm 46, the ³have no fear - God
is our refuge and our strength² passage.
The chorus, ³If
the earth should change, if the mountains shake, if the sea should
rage, all is well,² is sung with calm and steady vocals set to upbeat
guitar and drums. The theme of ³fear not² is strung through all five of the Radiohead-style
songs on this mini-album. The lyrics ³This life is but a breath,
compared to what You have in store for me one day,² from the song
En Masse, summarize the ³be anxious for nothing² mood of the album. Even the instrumental song, ³Sunstorm,² which displays guitar
work as unique as its title, is successful in bringing the listener
in a place of rest in Godıs love.
Rosenbohm said
the goal of his worship band is similar to the goal of Ignite Church,
where the bandıs bassist Paul Bartelme is pastor. Ignite is a new,
contemporary church of 30 to 40 people, that meets in the Comfort
Inn. Its goal is to help people find Jesus in a way that is relevant
to progressive culture.
³I want to be creative,
yet stay within the category of worship. I want to write music thatıs powerful and that touches a whole
new section of society,² Rosenbohm said.
For the time being,
Rosenbohm has moved to Colorado to be with his brother who is suffering
from a brain tumor. He
was hired as a worship leader at the church where his brother is
a youth pastor. Although he enjoys his new job in Colorado,
he hopes to someday reunite with Barteleme and their drummer, Trace
Smith, to write and record a full-length album.
³Thereıs no one
Iıd rather play with than those two guys,² Rosenbohm said. ³We made
a good team.²
Rosenbohm is 21,
and though Barteleme and Smith are in their mid-30s, he said they
have surprisingly similar music tastes. When he had trouble trying
to write music to go along with his lyrics, the guys would begin
to experiment with him and within a few hours they would have an
intricate and wonderful song like ³Sunstorm,² that none of them
could have come up with on their own.
God willing,
the three men of ³Ever Alive² will collaborate again and bless San
Diego with more of their peculiar praise. In the meantime, copies
of their EP can be purchased by sending a request to info@ignitechurch.com,
or by calling (760) 212-8752. Samples of their music are also available
on the website, www.ignitechurch.com.
