Michael W. Smith, Nichole Nordeman top winners at annual Dove awards
Steven
Curtis Chapman and CeCe Winans hosted the 34th Annual Dove Awards on April
10 at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville. “I was honored
to be asked to host,” said Winans. Chapman added, “I’m glad
to be giving back to what has meant so much to me.”
Nineteen
performances included New Artist of the Year nominees Big Daddy Weave, Daily
Planet, Jeff Deyo, Paul Colman Trio, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Worship
Circus and Souljahz among others and a multi-artist performance of “Friends”
marking Michael W. Smith’s 20th anniversary in music.
Nearly
five months pregnant, Nichole Nordeman took top honors by earning seven Dove
Awards including Female Vocalist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. Her
#1 radio-hit “Holy” from Woven and Spun, which she wrote and performed,
was recognized as Song of the Year and the best Pop Contemporary Song. Her
seventh Dove recognized her performance on the Special Event Album of the
Year, City on a Hill - Sing Alleluia.
Smith
added six Doves to his collection with Artist of the Year and his first award
for Male Vocalist of the Year. After the show, he commented that he was surprised
he won Male Vocalist because he didn’t think he had that great of a
voice. Apparently the voters felt differently and also awarded him for Praise
and Worship Album of the Year, called Worship Again, which he performed and
produced.
Gospel
greats Pat Boone, Amy Grant and Blind Boys of Alabama were officially inducted
into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame for their contributions to the growth of
contemporary Christian and gospel music.
For
the third straight year, Feed the Children, the third largest U.S. charity
involved in global aid, was the official charity for the awards show.
