Explicit worship for Christians

By RENEE JOHNSON

Want to hear some explicit worship? Instead of a label that says “explicit content, parents be advised,” this label would be a warning for “explicit content, words only pertain to worshipping His Majesty.” Seven Layer Soul, a band out of Oceanside, wants to bring you along with them in worship to God. Their style of music would be considered Christ-centered contemporary rock that is conventional and straightforward.

Seven Layer Soul’s mission statement is: “to know God, and to make Him known. We believe...that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are redeemed and justified by His shed blood.”

The band consists of five members: guitarist Joe Rangel, bassist Eugene (Eug) Galati, drummer David Rangel, guitarist Rick Hall and percussionist David (Odie) Freund. They call their home church Calvary Chapel of Oceanside.

Want to hear more about their music? Take a look at some of these explicit lyrics taken from the song “The Tree!”

“On the tree, you died and set me free, crown of thorns, You wore the shame of iniquity, the reeds on Your back, the spikes in Your hands, You gave Your life for everyman, and I fall on my knees and pray...I love you Father, I praise You Son, I worship You, Holy Spirit, more than anything or anyone. With my life, a living sacrifice, sanctified, set aside and given life, the nails in Your feet, the blood on Your brow, paid a debt that You did not owe, all for me, the price I could not pay, and I fall on my knees and pray.”

Joe Rangel says that of all the songs they sing, “The Tree” means the most because it represents “the total price that He paid that we could never pay.” Joe and the rest of the band want everyone to know that the best thing you can do for God is to be available.

When they came together as a band they had no idea what God’s full potential for them was, but with an idea in their head to start a local Christian band, they trusted in faith. Then God came in and wiped their idea out and gave them one “a million times better than I thought,” said Rangel.

Bassist Galati, when asked what they want to be best known for and why, said that he “would always glorify the Lord with our music, never will compromise, and walk (the walk) versus talk.”

This humble band - always putting God first - says it is a privilege and an honor to represent God in their music. They hope that you would feel the power of the gospel, that you would worship with them and find a message of surrendering, hope and a testimony. One of their favorite Bible verse comes from Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (NKJV). They sing, “When I wake up in the morning, when I’m sleeping late at night, when I’m praying for your healing, I can see your shining light, Oh...when I call out Your name, I can see the crimson stains upon Your hands, upon Your face, You’re all I need, more than the air to breathe, or eyes to see, You’re all I need...”
