Newspaper recognized by EPA, FCN

Good News, Etc. received numerous awards from the Evangelical Press Association and the Fellowship of Christian Newspapers on May 24-27 in Chicago.

“We feel it’s not only the individual writer or photographer who should be recognized, but also our advertisers and supporters who help make the paper possible,” said Rick Monroe, editor/publisher. “We have been blessed with great support for the paper, there are many people to say thank you to.”

Two of the awards were from the Evangelical Press Association. One was in the Higher Goals category, where the newspaper entries were judged alongside magazines like Christianity Today, Focus on the Family, and denominational publications. Good News, Etc. received a fourth place award in the Critical Review category for Al Menconi’s review of “The Passion of the Christ.”

The second EPA recognition for Good News, Etc. was an “award of merit” certificate in the newspaper category under Awards of Excellence.

The Fellowship of Christian Newspapers consists of Christian Newspapers from all over the United States and Canada. FCN is a sub-group of the EPA.

Good News, Etc. received five additional awards from the FCN:

• First Place in General Article, “Lost Boys of Sudan” by Francine Phillips.

• First place in Critical Review, “Passion of the Christ” by Al Menconi.

• Second place in Candid Photo, “Prayer Jam” event. Photo by Colleen Monroe.

• Fifth place in Reporting, “Mt. Soledad Cross controversy” by Kyle Otto.

• Certificate of Merit, Awards of Excellence for newspapers.

“We are blessed for the newspaper to receive so many awards,” Monroe said. “There are so many individuals, including proofreaders, route drivers and advertisers who make it possible.”

The newspaper, based in Vista, is in its 21st year of publishing. It prints 42,000 copies in two geographic zones - North County and San Diego.
