BE
OF GOOD CHEER
America's communicators have the "glummies," and there is no sense
to it, beyond making money for the communicators. Reading the daily
press, watching the cable shows, staring at the photos in the so-called
newsweeklies, one is deafened and wishes they would all cut down
on the volume. It seems part of their idea is to...
MESSIAH
AS OUR BRIDEGROOM
Everyone seems to love a wedding! This time of year it is not uncommon
to see the ceremonies taking place in churches, synagogues, parks
or at the beach. There is something special about a man and woman
sharing their vows among their family and friends. Unfortunately,
there is a struggle today over the institution of...

After breaking up with his girlfriend, Wei-Li Tjong, a young New York

Offensive Terminology
By
Christine Watson, Vista
I dislike appearing
"nitpicky," but I feel that I must object to the use of the term
"suck" in one of your May issue top story titles. I realize that
time and constant usage of a word can minimize its offensiveness.
Perhaps that is what has happened in this case. But I still wonder
if San Diego Life Church and your paper are even aware of the original
meaning and history of that term? If you did, I doubt that any Christian
would ever consider using it in the same sentence with "church."
One suggestion for a better title might have been "because church
shouldn't be boring."
Land
Use, Home Prices
By
Bill Holmes, Carlsbad
While Senator Barbara
Boxer is trying to get the federal government to declare more than
2 million acres in California off-limits to development, California's
other Democrat senator, Dianne Feinstein has already brokered a
deal that excludes 16,500 acres. Both of these liberal senators
- and many others - have repeatedly wrung their hands over a lack
of "affordable housing" in California. Meanwhile, they are doing
all they can to reduce the supply of land and, hence increase its
price and that of any dwelling built on it.
Domestic
Violence
By
Name Withheld, San Diego
Thank you for the article
on domestic violence in the church in the May edition. I recently
separated from an abusive husband and I know the article will encourage
believers to think more deeply about this important issue. Though
the article is well written, I am concerned that it does not comment
on domestic violence in clergy homes. I believe clergy may not respond
to domestic violence as readily as they could because it is a problem
in far more ministry homes than we'd dare to admit. Or, since the
greatest cover-ups happen in clergy homes, perhaps we simply don't
know. After 14 years of emotional, verbal, physical and financial
abuse by my husband, an ordained minister, I finally had the courage
to actively confront the abuse. Exposing an abusive pastor takes
the issues outlined in the article to an even touchier level. Who
wants to believe the man who performed their wedding, baptized their
