PESHAWAR, Pakistan  - The government of Pakistan’s North West Frontier province voted on June 2 in favor of a bill that incorporates sharia code into the local judicial system. Said to be pro-Taliban, the provincial government passed the bill that calls for the Islamization of educational institutions, the economy and the courts. The province, located on Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, is the first local government in Pakistan to institute the strict Islamic code of conduct on civilians. Members of religious minorities in the region, including Christians, have already begun to protest the government’s decision in favor of sharia. The code relies on a rigid interpretation of the Koran which dictates public and private conduct that the province’s court system plans to enforce on all its citizens, regardless of religion.
