POSITION: Executive
Director PHONE: 619-997-5332
LOCATION: San
Diego
LENGTH OF SERVICE: Almost 3 years
WHAT
DOES THE ORGANIZATION DO: Our mandate is to develop and channel resources through churches
individually and corporately throughout San Diego County, assisting
them with ongoing community outreach and involvement, and with emergency
preparedness. We provide resources to churches, ministries and families
in need, help congregations plan and organize their own community
outreach programs and events, and help network churches for special
community-wide opportunities like the Billy Graham Crusade, Promise
Keepers, the Interfaith Shelter Network, the National Day of Prayer,
and helping the Mennonites and others rebuilding homes for fire
survivors. We also provide opportunities for people of all ages
to get involved in personal outreach to neighbors.
YOUR PRIMARY DUTIES: My specific focus is on the project work we do with churches,
business donors and volunteers in order to reach the disadvantaged
of San Diego County for Jesus. There are many examples of these
efforts on our website at www.UOUonline.org, but to give one, we
have just been asked by the CRT to provide a “Welcome Home”
basket for each family as they complete rebuilding after the fires.
We have agreed to do so because it means we can place a new family
Bible into each home, along with other items which will help turn
a sparsely furnished house into a real home. Only a few families
have rebuilt so far, but over the next few years we will need to
create 2,000 of these baskets – a hundred or so by the end
of this year – each requiring a large picnic-type basket,
a family Bible, and an assortment of other items.
WHAT AREA OF EXPERTISE DO YOU HAVE OR ARE YOU KNOWN FOR? I am a networker,
an organizer, an activist. As God directs, I enjoy making things
happen!
WHAT
WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH? Our goal is to be a constantly more effective instrument available
to be used by God to assist the churches of San Diego reach their
neighbors for Christ.
WHERE
DO YOU FEEL THE LORD IS LEADING THE ORGANIZATION? It has been wonderful to be part of
an organization that God is so clearly using to help churches help
others in so many ways. A new direction where God is clearly leading
for the last year has been in congregational emergency preparedness.
WHAT
IS FRUSTRATING TO YOU? We are always eager to have more people involved – volunteers –
and those who can supply resources which are needed by others, etc.
I want everyone to experience the blessing of personal ministry
and sometimes it’s hard to communicate that effectively.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST IN YOUR JOB? The opportinity
to see God at work here in San Diego.
HOW
CAN PEOPLE PRAY FOR YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION? For wisdom and discernment, and for
volunteers and resources to match the opportunities.
IN
WHAT CAPACITY CAN VOLUNTEERS SERVE? There is a place for everyone, young and old! Volunteers can
fill “Welcome Home” baskets in our office, help fire
survivors clear their properties, throw a party for inner-city kids,
paint and repair an inner-city church building, answer phones and
prepare mailings, become an “encourager” to a struggling
family, teach a workshop, become a shopper or distribute needed
materials, help us with upcoming holiday projects, encourage their
church to develop a new outreach ministry, etc. We can use professionals
like doctors, counselors, chaplains, attorneys, accountants, teachers,
business people, fundraisers, and musicians. We can use anyne who
wants to help someone else.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: My husband, Vic Subia, is wonderfully supportive and I have
a terrific son who keeps my computer working and a creative daughter-in-law
who gives me great ideas (James and Jessica Wigdahl), three great stepsons (Will, Tom and Matt Durning),
my husband has a married son and daughter who live to the north
of us, with three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. I’m
a native of the area, as are my parents, so I also have lots of
uncles, aunts and cousins nearby.
WHERE IS YOUR HOME CHURCH? I’m a member of Skyline Church
and enjoy helping with special projects there, especially community
and world missions programs.
WHAT
IS YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURE? My life verse is Matthew 6:33 - to seek God as the focus of
life.
IS THERE A “NUGGET” YOU’D
LIKE TO SHARE?
I have learned that God can guide and use us most effectively when
we are moving ahead, keeping our eyes on Him, and that we shouldn’t
wait until we feel like doing something – the good feelings
will follow the good actions!
