Mary
James’ indie release, “Little Things,” is anything
but little. In fact, it is six big songs with a big sound on a mini-album.
Country and folk music fans will definitely want to give this one
a listen. With such influences as Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline and
Alison Krause, Mary has honed her own original musical style. Writing
all of the songs on “Little Things” shows what a true
talent she is.
Raised
in San Diego by a Lutheran pastor, James was no stranger to Christian
music. After a tumultuous spell of experimenting with all that Satan
has to offer, Mary has come full circle back to Christ. With renewed
dedication and tremendous support, James has immersed herself in
worshipping God with her greatest talent, music.
Accompanied
by a very capable band and producer, Steve Wetherbee, Mary James
has created a compelling album. After studying under a leading vocal
teacher in San Diego, Mary has fine-tuned her unique style. Numerous
live performances at a variety of San Diego venues has given her
the confidence and professionalism which shines through on this
debut project.
“More,”
the first track, sets the tone for the album in true country-acoustic
style. “The more I learn, You’ll give me more,”
the chorus reminds us. “Giving In,” a catchy up-beat
tune, tells us if we give up on all that hasn’t been working
in our lives, we are rewarded with God’s grace.
“Mercy
On Me” boasts some excellent guitar work with the message
of deliverance, which is the main theme of the album. Following
is “Hallelu,” in a more traditional pop sound. “Open
your heart to God,” the singer suggests to questioning souls.
The gospel choir is a nice accompaniment to this song.
Fine
electric guitar work starts off “No Matter What.” The
comforting reassurance, “I will love you no matter what, I
will give you all I have,” is well written and arranged. The
title track, “Little Things,” is a gentle ballad in
an ethereal folk style. Showcasing Mary’s talent for songwriting,
and the ability to draw from personal experience. “Help me
learn how to forgive by the way that you forgive,” is as much
a plea as a proclamation.
James
serves as a worship leader at Shadow Mountain Community Church and
The Rock Church in San Diego. We look forward to a new release by
this compelling artist in the near future. But in the meantime,
“Little Things” is pure joy.
