 Up Close and Personal

Introducing… Mari Rothman of Sonshine Haven

POSITION: Founder, CEO

PHONE: 619-440-1221

LOCATION: San Diego, East County

LENGTH OF SERVICE: 12 years leading Bible clubs, 5 years as Haven director

WHAT DOES THE ORGANIZATION DO? Mornings are for moms shopping for free clothing and groceries. Afternoons are filled with after-school Bible Clubs and Haven life-skill classes. Nine-year-old Mercedes summed it up, “I wished I lived at Sonshine Haven — everyone knows me, loves, me and there’s lots to eat!”

YOUR PRIMARY DUTIES: Share Jesus and raise awareness of the needs of hurting children and how we can help them.

WHAT AREA OF EXPERTISE DO YOU HAVE OR ARE YOU KNOWN FOR? Bringing Jesus to kids through Bible clubs, camps and Haven life-skill classes. Helping families and with food and clothing, prayer and biblical encouragement.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH? Help broken kids (kindergarten to college/career) become useful, giving adults.

WHERE DO YOU FEEL THE LORD IS LEADING THE ORGANIZATION: We would love to reach more children for Jesus in our Bible clubs.  My dream is to open a Christian foster home and perhaps another Haven.

WHAT IS FRUSTRATING TO YOU? Losing club teachers at schools where we already have a trusted relationship with the administration.  We need more volunteer teachers! A second frustration is all the details and paper work. We have only 1 & 1/2 full-time paid staff.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST IN YOUR JOB? Telling the kids about Jesus and watching them change and grow spiritually.

HOW CAN PEOPLE PRAY FOR YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION? Please pray for my daughter, Lindsay for healing from advanced liver disease. Pray for an administrative assistant who could share a leadership role and my vision.

DO YOU HAVE A NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS? YES!!! There were over 18,000 hours of volunteer work completed this past year! We could especially use help at the Haven classes with sewing, music, photography or any life-skill class.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: My husband of 33 years, Michael, is CEO of the Haircut Stores. Shelby (20), my daughter, is a financial planner. Travis (27) is general manager at Mission Trails Golf Club. Todd (26) is an intern at Saddleback Community Church. Lindsay (19) is an action sports photographer.

WHAT IS YOUR HOME CHURCH? Skyline Church - I was a Bible study leader and key discipler for many years until this ministry grew into my passion to reach kids for Christ. Now the church helps the Haven as a part of their missions outreach.

IS THERE A FAVORITE BOOK THAT HAS MADE AN IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? Prayer of Jabez - it reminds me to ask God to enlarge our territory and to protect us from evil.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURE? Psalm 139.  I use this chapter weekly and sometimes daily to remind the children that God loves them and has a plan for them.

IS THERE A “NUGGET” YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9
