POSITION: President PHONE: 619-795-6236
LOCATION: San Diego County
LENGTH OF SERVICE: 16 years in present
position, 14 years heading other international ministries
inTexasand California, 13 years Lutheran congregational
ministry.
WHAT
DOES THE ORGANIZATION DO? Angelcare has schools and clinics in six Third World countries.
We offer Americans opportunities for short-term incarnational ministry
experiences in our schools and we have launched our Home Front Campaign
in a ministry to young military families.
YOUR PRIMARY DUTIES: Administrative, inspiration, and encouraging support and involvement
in our work.
WHAT
AREA OF EXPERTISE DO YOU HAVE OR ARE YOU KNOWN FOR? Angelcare is known for taking high risk projects that others
avoid and for effectively solving problems. We are also known for
the fact that we do not look for easy or quick fixes.
WHAT
WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH? To give people an incarnational ministry experience through
which they “Become the presence of Christ as they serve others,
especially poor and needy children; sense the presence of Christ
in the lives of those they serve.” Here in San Diego, I would
like to gather a group of congregations and individuals who will
work with me in creating a Home Front Campaign that we can take
across the United States.
WHERE
DO YOU FEEL THE LORD IS LEADING THE ORGANIZATION? I feel led to work with young military families who need to be thanked
for the sacrifices they make for our country and help to meet the
additional hardships they face when a husband, wife, or parent is
deployed on behalf of our country.
WHAT
IS FRUSTRATING TO YOU? 1) Getting the word out about
the needs of these young families, especially the children. 2) Getting
word out that we are here to help congregations reach beyond themselves
in ways that are difficult if they undertake a ministry to young
military families alone. 3) Getting people to separate their feelings
for or against war – or a specific war – from what I
believe to be our Lord’s call to serve struggling, lonely
and financially pressured military families.
WHAT
DO YOU ENJOY MOST IN YOUR JOB? Meeting people who care about the poor and needy people in
the world and who want to minister to those needs in a way that
protects the dignity of those served.
HOW
CAN PEOPLE PRAY FOR YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION? They can pray that I am effective in
getting the word out about the needs of military families in a wise
and caring manner. They can pray for young military families.
DO
YOU HAVE A NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS? Absolutely. We are in the beginning of this ministry. We need
all the help we can get. We need people with almost every talent
and skill you can name. They should call (619) 795-6236 or (800)
842-2810.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: My wife, Janet, and I have five children ranging in age from
16 to 45. We adopted our 16 year old in Guatemala the day she was
born. In a sense, she blessed us with a second family. There are
22 years between Elizabeth and her next brother, Peter.
WHAT IS YOUR HOME CHURCH? I have two home churches. Here in San Diego we are members
of Ascension Lutheran Church. We are involved in youth ministry.
I have been an associate minister at Hope Lutheran Church in Hollywood
for 23 years. I preach once a month and teach periodic Bible classes.
IS
THERE A FAVORITE BOOK THAT HAS MADE AN IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? In addition to the Bible that impacts
me daily, my understanding of parish ministry was dramatically changed
by Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Church, and I am working my way through The
Purpose Driven Life.
WHAT
IS YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURE? I have chosen John 3:30 for the theme of my ministry: “He
(Jesus) must increase, I must decrease.”
