JAMES BROWN DEMONSTRATES HE CAN CERTAINLY "SING AND PLAY" WITH EASE
By ROXANNE THOMAS

Jason Brown is a singer and a player, changing from saxophone to guitar to singing with the ease of a great talent. Jason flows from traditional jazz to gospel as effortlessly as he sets down his saxophone and picks up his guitar.

Performing at his debut release party and free concert on Nov. 15, Jason had a nearly packed house on their feet and clapping along in praise. Opening with traditional gospel standards, the audience was treated to exceptional saxophone playing accompanied by a very capable band of fine musicians.

After a short break for a special presentation (and to no doubt catch his breath) once again Jason took the stage. But this time it was with his guitar for an acoustic set of worship songs written mostly by himself. He performed “Light of the World,” “God is Love,” and an outstanding version of “Fallen in Love with Jesus,” with a voice that shines like a true star. While the element of jazz is to be in the moment, Jason never takes his eyes off the Father or ceases to give Him the glory.

Songs from “Sing and Play,” his new CD and reason for the party, were also performed. ‘Sing and Play,” the title track, is a clever song of worship that tricks you into thinking Jason is singing with a full band and back up singers. In fact, all instrumentals and vocals are performed by Jason. Following is the classically smooth jazz, hand clapper “I am.” “Love, Joy,” is a tribute to God’s ever-present love and reminds us to “Let the Lord take control.” A soulful Star Spangled Banner, and curious version of “Jesus Loves Me” are also notable.

“Sing and Play” is a prelude to a new project scheduled to be released in the summer. If this current sample is an example of what is to come, his next offering promises to be well worth the wait.

Originally from Los Angles, Jason has lived in San Diego for nearly 15 years. At the age of 13, after the tragic loss of his father, his mother gave him a saxophone, hoping he would direct his energies into something positive. Jason soon taught himself to play. He has since added drums, keyboard, and guitar to his list of talents. This gifted artist also adds song writing and producing, singing, acting, and modeling to his list of skills. Not only does this young man have an intense passion for making music, he has a sincere dedication to worship the Lord.

Possessing an enviable list of accomplishments at such a young age is an indication of how successful this artist will be. Jason was nominated as “Instrumentalist of the Year” in 2003 by the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Coast Radio Announcers Guild. Recording and performing all over the county since the age of 16, Jason has developed an energetic confidence. He has also shared the stage with such notable performers as Paul Taylor, Everette Harp, and Pamela Williams.

To help kick off the holiday season, Jason Brown will be performing at the Nice Guys Holiday Party in the Sports Arena parking lot on Dec. 6. This event benefits the local community by offering gifts and food to those in need. This is an excellent opportunity to help out those less fortunate in our own town, and have the opportunity to enjoy some excellent music.

Jason Brown’s latest C.D., “Sing and Play,” can be purchased at Berean Christian Store, 1-858-292-8052 or at the website, www.dreammakersentertainment.com. Sing and Play is a jazz album. It is also an album full of praise, proving that the Lord can be worshiped through any genre of music.
