 Up Close and Personal

Introducing . . .
Sandra Cully, San Diego County Library Association

POSITION: President                 PHONE: 619-479-2385

LENGTH OF SERVICE:  President 2 years; member 28 years

WHAT DOES THE ORGANIZATION DO? Provide a support to the church librarian, techniques and tools for building church media centers in any congregation, large or small. At each of our meetings we have a ³swap table² where we can give books to one another. National sends us ³Libraries Alive,² a magazine devoted to church libraries, also lists of suggested books. There is also a national conference coming up with workshops available.

YOUR PRIMARY DUTIES: I chair two meetings a year, spring and fall, follow up on contacts, help the board in planning our meetings and anything else needed.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH? We would like to see many church librarians take the opportunity to get together for fellowship and sharing of common problems and solutions. We are part of a national organization that is trying to reach out to all Christian churches, that is also our local goal.

WHAT ARE YOU BEST KNOWN FOR?  I am known for being part of Evangelical Bible Book Store.  The only expertise I bring is a love of books and people.

WHERE DO YOU FEEL THE LORD IS LEADING THE ORGANIZATION? Right now we seem to be in a holding pattern. Hopefully, it is to receive an influx of new members.

WHAT IS FRUSTRATING TO YOU? It is frustrating to find that many churches do not see the need to either have a library or to help it out financially. Many workers buy books from their own funds. Also to hear that congregations really donıt use the library or even know where it is located in their churches.

WHAT DO YOU  ENJOY MOST IN YOUR POSITION? Having others, Karen McFann and Kathie Russell, among them, who are full of ideas, so that when we meet as a group, there are many ways to help each other.

HOW CAN PEOPLE PRAY FOR YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION?  Pray for your own church library and librarian. If you donıt have one, start one. It only takes a few books.

IN WHAT CAPACITY CAN VOLUNTEERS SERVE? Please go to your own librarian and ask them what you can do. Iım sure they can find someway for you to be involved.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY?  My husband John and I have Evangelical Bible Book Store in North Park, since 1970.  We have been married 51 years and have 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

WHERE IS YOUR HOME CHURCH? I go to Bayview Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Chula Vista. I am the librarian and have taught Sunday school classes in the past. We have a faith family meeting in our home on Wednesday evenings.

IS THERE A SIGNIFICANT BOOK? Probably the one book that has had a profound impact was From Forgiven to Forgiving by Jay Adams. It really helped me so much with this aspect of living a Christian life.

A FAVORITE SCRIPTURE? 1Corinthians 10:13, ³No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man, BUT GOD IS FAITHFUL, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.²

IS THERE A NUGGET YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? Next time you go to church, look for your library and as you see all the books, give the Lord thanks, for the people who did the work to put them there, then check out a book often.
