The
Godkinz: CD Review
The
Godkinz is a talented, extraordinary group of three brothers ready
to ride the airwaves and dominate the music game by force. Their
first names are biblically picked: Ishmael, Isaac, and Israel. The
group name is definitely not fabricated; yet it is their birth last
name. They have become men of standard, full of integrity and dignity,
with musical abilities, not only as vocalists but musicians as well.
They
play as one band and perform as one voice with expressive harmonies.
Their music reflects their family, life, love, and faith. These
young men are represented as children of God through their very
own names. ³God is the reason why we sing, rock and live, representing
GK to the fullest,² exclaim the brothers. They have been living
out of the 6-1-9 (San Diego) since 1998 but are born and raised
on the soils of 2-5-3 (TAC-Town, WA).
After
delivering the long awaited self-titled debut in October, the San
Diego-based group has announced that they will be on tour with the
Katinas on the ³My Samoa Island Tour² this coming summer. The Godkinz
have made their mark nationally and locally; winners of the 619
San Diego Gospel Music Award Artist of the Year and Best Group of
the Year. They have truly taken their music to another level. The
Godkinz passionately share the message of hope through their wide
range of music styles from island-influenced pop, R&B, hip-hop,
neo-soul, Motown to gospel; never ceasing to amaze the crowd.
With
the rich blend of harmonies, original songs and urban blend of ³R-Hop²
which is described by Isaac to be a bit of R&B and Hip-Hop,
they write and create music that is from true life experiences.
They attribute their sensitivity to God by their Christian upbringing.
Dedicated to God from before birth, their parents (father is a pastor
of a Samoan church) knew that God would use their sons in a mighty
way. Many have been saved and changed because of the ministry of
GK.
Not
only are the Godkinz all singers, musicians and composers but they
also are co-owners of Estilo Music Entertainment along with Latin
and hip-hop gospel artists Jaz and Don Diego. The GK album has been
co-produced by the brothers giving them freedom to create the direction
that this album would go.
Let¹s
take a look at what the first GK project brings to the scene. ³Tilt
your Hat² the hot single opens things up on this CD much like it
would at a concert by getting the energy going right from the start
and giving the listener a taste of what is to come. Bounce a couple
of songs and jump up to ³Desire² on track 5 with the powerful Reggaeton
sound and ³in your face² lyrics; focusing on the message of sexual
temptation that comes through seducing spirits. Truly, this is a
song with a strong message for the youth of today; it also features
the vocal talents of Jaz and Don Diego. This CD is truly on the
cutting edge. Other notables include the songs ³See You Through²
³West Coast² and the R&B hit ³Call Me.² Track number 11 ³Friday²
is one of my favorites; it has the hard hitting party sound that
you can dance to with the lyrics that will let every believer know
that they too can still party ³Jesus style.² This album is complete
from beginning to end; you find it all. There is a message of salvation
in ³Is there One.² This call to the listener is not hidden through
masked words and music, but makes a loving plea to the unbeliever
to choose Christ.
From
R-Hop vibe to the smooth old school sound, not forgetting the ever-popular
party mixes; it is a full package in one CD. This album has been
made to bless all who hear it and dedicated to their grandma (Grandma
Song #16) who always encouraged them to serve the Lord.
Just
last month I personally took this CD to the streets in an urban
area in National City and played it for about 20 teenagers; I wanted
to get their response on this project. The kids began to dance to
it and tried to figure out who it was. Much to their surprise it
was not any of the artists that they had mentioned and even more
impressed and shocked that it was ³God Music² as they called it.
This ³God Music² had reached into their zone and they were able
to identify with the words and beats. GK has captured a sound that
could be heard on MTV, BET or any major secular radio station. It
is just that good!
One
may ask what is a GK? It is a genuine relationship between a highly
honorable Father (GOD) and his gifted, blessed Children (KIN) thus,
presenting a unique mixture of urban- flavored sound; ³We Call it...Urban
Worship!² The Godkinz-GK.
This
very diverse group knows that they have been called to minister
to the streets with their music and message, but they also know
how to unify the body of Christ and usher in the presence of God
through worship. While ³The Godkinz² project offers something different
for their fans in every song, it is also a fun album that is irresistible
from start to finish for newcomers!
