Music Spotlight
"The Gospel Connection Project"
released by San Diego native

Most of the reviews that I share are usually on one particular artist and CD. However, this month I am profiling a compilation album with various artists. Singer/promoter/producer Robert Earl Dean, native of San Diego, releases the first of his upcoming albums The Gospel Connection Project, Volume 1.

Earl Dean, as most of the folks in the San Diego music scene come to know him by, has hit the music circuit by storm. Not only is he a singer with his own group ÒTwo for HymnÓ but he is also attributed for promoting great gospel artists and bringing them into AmericaÕs finest city. ÒEarlÓ Dean founded DeanÕs Vision Promotions in San Diego in the summer of 1997. His first promotional endeavor was a standing room only concert that included such powerhouse artists as Eddie James & Colourblind (Fresh Wine Records), Bishop T.D. JakesÕ critically acclaimed stage production ÒBehind Closed Doors,Ó and the critically acclaimed gospel comedy HOLLA!! (Biggame Ventures/Rising Entertainment), which has taken Christian comedy to another level.

With music promotions on his heart and mind, Earl sought to bring the gospel music ÒindieÓ (independent artist) to the forefront of the music industry. ÒIt is really hard for independent artists to get their music heard especially when they are not signed with a major label. This project was made for them, so that they can be heard. They are not just singers but anointed singers,Ó he said.

This project features several artists. Romaine Jones starts off with the upbeat song ÒGimme the WordÓ which is straight to the point as he talks about the Sword, the Spirit and the Word of God. ÒCalling YouÓ brings the sounds of gospel artist Fons, who shares from his heart Òthe Word from you is what I need. Can you see that I really need you, IÕm calling you JesusÓ are lyrics that surround this cry. Next, a very melodious vibe is presented in the smooth lyrics and harmonies of Nena Lockhart with the song ÒFather.Ó Every song has a different sound but together bringing one same message. ÒSearching for peace, wondering where I should beÓ are the opening words to ÒGiver of LifeÓ a song that leads you to his feet by Yolandra Simmons Jones. This song will truly bring the greatness of God to your mind and will lead you to keep worshiping with the next song that invited you to ÒSurrenderÓ by Tachina Daniels.

Haskel Jackson another of the artists featured on this compilation has had the opportunity to write for Smokie Norful. His song ÒI Got NewsÓ brings the R&B flavor of the gospel that will minister to each listener. Tanya Decuir presents ÒSearched all OverÓ with the choral background that fills this song with a large presence of His power and glory. San Diego artist Lenee Battle sings ÒThere are TimesÓ a song that reminds you about the times that one cannot understand, but God does. This one will reach and move you to a deeper level in God. Tinika Wyatt another San Diego artist is also featured on this project with the song ÒWhen I Think.Ó This is an upbeat song with a real message of the things that one thinks, and how you can say, ÒMy soul cries Hallelujah thank you Jesus for saving me.Ó The album also features Charles Hill in the song ÒSince I Met YouÓ a very special selection that wraps up all the songs on this album beautifully. The call to trust in God and to reach for Him with the lyrics that are life changing, ÒLord this opportunity to turn my life for you. Lord IÕll never be the same and how you turned my life since I met you.Ó

Most albums like to end on a slow note. However, this project ends on an upward powerful note with the song ÒWe Shall be ChangedÓ and the dance track that will get you up and dancing with it, too. ÒFront back side to side, stomp your feet, lift your hands and raise them high.Ó This album has it all, from the dancing, shouting jams to the down on your knees and worship the king selections. You will truly be blessed. Encourage the artists by listening to their music. Support the independent artist by purchasing their products. They love the Lord and this album is proof of their fruit. Robert Earl Dean will continue to produce future volumes that will promote the indie artist. The album was nominated for an Ensound Music Award in 2007. You can also see Earl Dean as he hosts the Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues.
